The Okmok Story

A rare island, a rare herd, and the ranchers bringing them together.

Manifesto

Some things cannot be engineered. They can only be found — and then cared for.

Far out in the Aleutians, in the stretch of ocean called the Cradle of Storms, sits Umnak Island: over 500,000 acres of treeless volcanic grassland, kept green year-round by an ocean-tempered microclimate found almost nowhere else at this latitude. On it lives a herd of roughly 13,000 cattle — descendants of Russian-era stock shaped by more than a century of natural selection, isolated from mainland diseases, needing no vaccines, no antibiotics, no help.

Okmok exists to bring that land and that herd under responsible management. Our founders are 5th-generation cattle ranchers — experts in rotational grazing, humane herd management, and soil enrichment. We are pairing that heritage with modern tools: GPS halter technology, invisible fencing, and AI-driven herd analytics.

The result will be land that heals instead of erodes, a herd managed instead of feral, and some of the most natural grass-fed beef on the planet — processed at our USDA-certified facility at Fort Glenn, steps from the grassland where the cattle lived.

The Name & Brand

Shaped by the caldera.

The name Okmok is taken directly from the broad, approximately 10-kilometer-wide caldera that dominates northeastern Umnak Island. Our brand is a minimalist translation of that exact geographic feature—intentionally low, wide, and open. It is a restrained, elemental expression of the place that anchors us. No frontier clichés, no false heritage—just the shape of the land.

Operating Principles

01

The Island Sets the Terms

Umnak was working long before we arrived — selecting cattle, growing grass, carving coastline. Our job is to manage within its rules: rotational grazing matched to the land's recovery, herds kept out of nesting grounds and streams, archaeological sites mapped and protected.

02

Nature's Work, Preserved

A century of natural selection built a herd whose greatest value is its genetics — cold-adapted, grass-thriving, disease-free. We manage to preserve that inheritance, not breed it away. No vaccines, no antibiotics, no hormones — because none are needed.

03

Heritage Plus Technology

Five generations of ranching knowledge, amplified by modern tools: GPS halters and invisible fencing instead of barbed wire, AI-driven analytics instead of guesswork, and real-time herd data shared with the community that supports us.

04

Transparency over Claims

We do not use unverified superlatives. Our progress is documented, our status labels are truthful, and our product will speak for itself.
